Where AC3 comes from

AC3 is Dolby Digital, the audio format of the DVD era and still the standard soundtrack codec on broadcast television, Blu-ray and a great deal of streamed video. A standalone .ac3 file is almost always a soundtrack that has been separated from its picture — extracted from a DVD, demuxed from a recording, or pulled out of an MKV by someone assembling a release.

It is a broadcast and cinema format rather than a music one, so general-purpose players are patchy about it and portable devices largely ignore it. Converting to MP3 turns a soundtrack into something a phone will play.

Six channels into two

This is the part that matters and the part most converters handle silently. An AC3 track is frequently 5.1: front left, centre, front right, two surrounds and a low-frequency effects channel. MP3 is stereo. Something has to decide how six channels become two, and that decision changes what you hear.

The downmix here follows the standard Dolby coefficients, and it is worth knowing what they do because the dialogue depends on them. Measured on a test file with a separate tone in every channel, the front left and right arrive at full level, the centre channel is mixed into both sides about 4 dB down, the surrounds fold in around 6 dB down, and the LFE channel is discarded entirely.

The centre being present is the part that matters: in a film mix it carries nearly all the dialogue, and a downmix that dropped it would give you effects and music with no speech. Discarding the LFE, by contrast, is deliberate and correct — it holds only the sub-bass rumble meant for a dedicated subwoofer, and folding it into a stereo mix makes the result boomy without making it fuller.

Why the dialogue sounds quiet, and what to do

Film soundtracks are mixed for a cinema, with an enormous dynamic range between whispered dialogue and an explosion. On a proper system that is the point. Through laptop speakers or earbuds it means you cannot hear the words without the effects becoming painful — the single most common complaint about converted movie audio.

The fix is not volume, it is dynamic range. Run the MP3 through the compressor, which pulls the loud parts down and lifts the quiet ones so speech stays intelligible. Normalizing alone will not do it: a single explosion sets the peak and everything else stays exactly as quiet as it was.

Which bitrate for a soundtrack

AC3 on a DVD is typically 384 or 448 kbps across six channels, which is a fairly modest allocation per channel. After a downmix to stereo, 192 kbps MP3 is comfortably enough and 256 is generous. Choosing 320 does not recover anything the source lacked. If the track is mostly dialogue — a commentary, a lecture recording, an audio description — 128 is fine and the file is half the size.

Video files and multiple tracks

You can drop the video itself rather than extracting the audio first: MKV, MP4, M2TS and VOB all work, and the audio track is pulled out and converted in one step. Where that gets awkward is a disc rip with several tracks — a 5.1 mix, a stereo mix, a director's commentary and two languages. The first audio track is what gets converted, and there is no way to choose in a browser. If the first track is not the one you want, MKVToolNix or VLC on the desktop can extract a specific stream.

E-AC3 and the newer formats

Enhanced AC3, sometimes written E-AC3 or Dolby Digital Plus, is the streaming-era successor and converts here as well. Dolby TrueHD and Atmos are a different matter — they are lossless and object-based, they usually live inside a Blu-ray container rather than as a plain file, and they are not handled here. Their core is generally an AC3 or E-AC3 stream that a desktop tool can extract if you need it.
