Discord's upload limits, current as of 2026
- Free Discord — 10 MB per file. This is what most users hit. Server boosts no longer raise it on the free tier.
- Nitro Basic — 50 MB per file (in DMs and on boosted servers). 25 MB on non-boosted servers historically; check the upload error for the exact number Discord cites.
- Nitro (full) — 500 MB per file. Almost no audio file hits this.
The compressor here picks a bitrate that fits your file under the target with a small safety margin (about 5%). If your source is longer than the limit allows even at the lowest reasonable bitrate, we'll tell you and suggest trimming first.
What gets sent to Discord at each tier
- 10 MB free, voice clip (mono): ~20 min at 64 kbps, ~30 min at 44 kbps, ~40 min at 32 kbps.
- 10 MB free, music (stereo): ~5 min at 256 kbps, ~6 min at 192 kbps, ~10 min at 128 kbps.
- 50 MB Nitro Basic, music (stereo): ~25 min at 256 kbps, ~50 min at 128 kbps.
- 500 MB Nitro: ~4 hours of CD-quality MP3 or ~80 min of WAV.
If it still won't fit
The compressor can only do so much. If you're trying to send a 90-minute lecture as a single 10 MB file, even 16 kbps mono won't help — quality would be unusable. Better options:
- Trim it to the part you actually want to share.
- Send the part in pieces (Discord lets you chain multiple smaller files).
- Upload it elsewhere (Catbox, file.io, your own Drive) and paste the link.
- Upgrade to Nitro Basic for a single $3-ish/month if you do this often.

Why does Discord say "Your files are too powerful"?
That's their cute way of saying you hit the upload cap. Compress here and re-upload.
Can I send a WAV to Discord?
You can, but WAV is uncompressed — ~10 MB per minute stereo. Any clip over 1 minute exceeds Discord free's 10 MB. Convert to MP3 first, even on Nitro it's a courtesy to other people downloading the file.
How do I send a long voice memo from my phone?
If it's from an iPhone Voice Memos app, it's already a .m4a (AAC, compressed). Drop it here, pick your Discord tier, and we'll re-encode at a fitting bitrate. For very long memos, trim first.
What about video — can this strip the video and just send audio?
Yes. Drop the MP4 or MOV, we'll extract the audio and compress it as MP3. The video track is discarded.
Does it work for Discord voice messages I downloaded?
Yes. Discord voice messages are OGG (Opus). Drop the .ogg file, get MP3 back. Useful if you want to archive or share a voice message outside Discord.
Does my file get uploaded to your servers?
No. The compression is in-browser. Your file goes to Discord directly, not through us.
Can I keep the original quality?
Only if it already fits. The whole point is to shrink it. If you want max quality and have Nitro, pick the 500 MB tier — we'll barely compress at all.
What is Discord's audio upload limit?
Free Discord caps regular uploads at 10 MB. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB. Full Nitro goes to 500 MB. Server boosts can also raise the per-server file limit. Pick the tier you actually have — that's the size the compressed file targets.
How do I compress an audio file under 10 MB for Discord free?
Pick the '10 MB — Discord free' preset, drop your file, and we'll encode at a bitrate that lands the output under 10 MB. For a 5-minute clip that's around 256 kbps stereo; for a 30-minute recording that drops to ~44 kbps mono. If the file is too long to fit even at low bitrate, trim it first with our audio cutter.
Why is my MP3 still too big after compressing?
Almost always because the audio is longer than your size budget allows. 10 MB at the lowest reasonable voice bitrate (32 kbps mono) is about 40 minutes. Anything longer needs to be trimmed first — use our audio cutter to grab the part you actually want to send.
Can I just upload a WAV?
Technically yes, but WAVs are huge — about 10 MB per minute. A 2-minute WAV blows past Discord free's 10 MB limit. MP3 at 128 kbps holds the same 2 minutes in roughly 2 MB.
Will the compressed file still sound okay?
For voice clips, yes — under 10 MB you can fit several minutes at 96 kbps mono with no audible loss. For music, longer clips at lower bitrates will sound thinner, but Discord playback is rarely critical listening. For high-quality music shares, use Nitro and target 50 MB instead.
Does my file actually upload anywhere?
No. The compression runs in your browser tab. Your file goes to Discord, not through us.
